The Fragments and Grey Daturas...

...are special guests on the show this week.

From Sydney, Damian and Piers have been kicking round in various bands but have now settled into their roles as the Fragments. They have just stepped out of the recording studio with a new single - Obvious - and they'll be on the phone to tell me all about it tomorrow.

The Grey Daturas are a local instrumental trio that have been around for a few years and have just released a shredding instrumental album called Dead In The Woods, which, being that time of year and all, has just sneaked it in to make my top Australian releases of the year - if indeed I was to attempt a list. It's an awesome album on Crashing Jets, the label that brought you that incredible My Disco EP recently.

From their website:
This November, the Grey Daturas give birth to their 2nd album ‘Dead In The Woods’ on the CRASHINGJETS label (My Disco, Agents of Abhorrence); chock full of spaced-out jams, freak-outs and the usual noise you'd expect from the improvisational trio.

Since their earliest shows in 2001 the Grey Daturas have been celebrated as being one of the loudest and most uncompromising live acts gigging within Melbourne’s underground scene. The band’s main objective from their onset was to improvise live soundtracks to 16 mm films, however since losing a permanent projectionist the three core members of the Grey Daturas, Robert Macmanus, Robert Mayson and Bonnie Mercer, have had to adapt to performing without regular visual accompaniments. While there are no actual ‘songs’ in the Grey Daturas repertoire, all improvisations reveal common traits distinct to the band… from electronic drones, impromptu rock riffing, industrious drumming , and most importantly, noise. Their sound has already gained them support slots with the likes of Magic Dirt, Neil Hamburger, Kim Salmon, Bar McKinnon (Mr Bungle), and Clann Zu. In 2002 The Grey Daturas headlined a night at the Next Wave Festival. They have double-headlined two tours to Adelaide (once with Sir and again with Birdblobs) and also headlined two tours to Hobart.

From the 11th to the 12th of the September 2004, the Grey Daturas knuckled down with Melbourne sound engineer Neil Thomason (Ricaine), to record a series of improvisations for their latest album ‘Dead in the Woods’. The 16 tracks selected for ‘Dead in the Woods’ traverses electronic drone-scapes, one minute freak-outs, blissfully-heavy psych jams and in-determinant music games. While crammed full of the sounds the daturas have shaped into their own they are not shy to draw upon influences as varied as The Stooges, German 70’s electronic outfit Cluster, American doom-drone band Earth, and 20th century composer John Cage.
The band have a couple of shows scheduled with Japanese act Limited Express (Has Gone?). Friday November 26 both bands will be at Missing Link (in the basement at 405 Bourke Street) from 5.30pm and again on Sunday November 28 they'll both be playing with the Young Professionals & Bug Girl at the Builders Arms in Fitzroy.

From the sublime to the ridiculous...

After a solid ONE WEEK's break from interviewing, this week sees the motherload of special guests. Jesus, can't a girl get some rest!!!

This week, not only is Joni Lightning set to serenade us live in the studio, but Paper Tiger call in from Adelaide, Youth Group jump on the telling bone from Sydney and Matt High - he of Meredith Music Festival which is creeping up oh so quickly - is coming in for a yarn as well.

PBS is where the action is.

And here's a whisper....

Live music week is happening at PBS in December - stay tuned for more details - but Midnight Juggernauts AND Dan Kelly & The Alpha Males are all raring for a live set on Tyranny Of Distance. I'll keep you posted.

Wednesday, November 10

Lightning, Tiger. Grrrrr...

I'm having a break from idle (idol) chit chat and even constructive chit chat this week with all new releases. Just the music. If you heard the show last week you'll agree that it's a relief.
Maybe one week too late.
He he. Oh well. My head has stopped hurting now and my beer breath is gone. Just.

New stuff just in includes Osterberg, Mexico City, Black Level Embassy, Genshen, the Grey Daturas and a couple of great local compilations. But there's more more more, loads more - I have some definite catching up to do - listen in and hear it all.

Next week will feature Joni Lightning - aka Dave Ong from Motor Ace - in acoustic mode live in the studio, with Adelaide darlings Paper Tiger calling on the phone too.

Inanely, Paper Tiger always get me thinking about Little Black Sambo. I think it shares the same thought path as the Love Of Diagrams song Tiger Pancakes. Hmmm fascinating.

What more do you want? Talk soon.

You Can't Stop The Music...

Just a reminder that this week is the last ever for live music as we know it at the Rob Roy. Get on down there all this week... there are some great line ups, particularly on Saturday and Sunday nights. Natalie and the Oh Traveller! crew along with the rest of the staff at the Rob have given us so many great nights - countless cold pots of beer and shots of schnapps, awesome bands and their bar staff rates right up there with the nicest in this old town. It's all over too soon, and we will sorely miss the Rob as a pivotal venue these past couple of years. I only wish I had experienced it more.
So this week, join me in holding up the bar - drink your fill and be wildly entertained at the Rob Roy. These bashes are gonna be mad. See the gig guide below for details, and see you down there at the Rob.

Hallowe'en, Cup Eve, The Rob Roy's Last Stand.
It's a busy weekend. We've got loads of guests to match.

Peapod is the new album from The Redsunband. It's been a favoured release on the show for a while now, but the trio will be in town on the weekend. Tune in to hear the very beautiful Sarah talk about the album, which was recorded here in Melbourne with help from Dean of Magic Dirt. Pity it's only radio...
...and don't have high expectations. It was an accident.
Bit By Bats are celebrating Hallowe'en with a special show next Sunday night at local haunt the Tote. More details here. It's a dress up night!! Prizes! Music! Spooky! Hear Pete tell scary stories on Tyranny Of Distance this week.

The Amazons are coming! Tuesday October 26 will see Amazonian Yolanda in the studio to chat about the girlie show that is Girls Rock The Gersh this Cup Eve - Monday November 1.

durbeyfield

I got durbeyfield coming in this week. They haven't been around all that long, but they have a very confident selftitled ep and a very nice website. Go see for yourself. Some of them will be in for some tunes on Tuesday October 19, so listen in.

Here's more about durbeyfield:

Mark and Tom met in a room at high school. Four weeks later they found Antonio in another room. They then found Simon and James, who were led to believe they shared the same parents. Through the successful use of doors and instruments they all played in the same room, revelling in the intoxicating process of creating music.

Soon after, they began playing in pubs in Melbourne. Before one of these gigs, a boarder of Scottish descent from the same high school, asked if he could come and drink the band's beer since he had run out of money. durbeyfield declined but he showed up anyway and successfully drank the rider. He kept this form up, gig after gig, until it was found out that he played trumpet. To this day he is still trying to play off his debt.

durbeyfield are…
Tom Flatman - Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Piano, Rhodes and Mandolin
Mark D'Angelo - Backing Vocals, Lead Guitar, Clarinet and Piano Accordian
Antonio Sanciolo - Backing Vocals, Cello, Piano and Organ
Simon Lawrie - BassJames Lawrie - Drums, Egg and Glockenspiel
Kevin Lavery - Backing Vocals, Trumpet, Harmonium and Keyboards

The return of Dan Kelly, Gareth Liddiard and Oneironaut!

My oh my! This week is a corker! On Tuesday October 5...

I am honoured to host Dan Kelly (he of the Tabloid Blues and multiple ARIA award nominations) and Gareth Liddiard (acclaimed Alpha Male and Drone) for a wee chat and some tunes. The boys are back in town and playing some shows that have been too damn long in coming. So if you're as impatient as I am to hear these guys again, tune in to welcome them back and get an early taste of the tabloid blues.

Catch Dan Kelly & the Alpha Males with the Drones on Thursday October 7 (with the Vandas too) and Friday October 8 (with Midnight Juggernauts) at the Tote. And I'll be on decks too. I can barely contain myself!

And...

Oneironaut pay a dreamy visit to Tyranny Of Distance. Lord how I've missed them... but they are back in venues and shops with their new release, the stunning Pure Through Evolution out now on Low Transit Industries.

Here's more on Oneironaut:

Melbourne four piece Oneironaut have been around since 1996. Following the release of two independent EP's and 2001's 'Antipodean Dream' album on Sydney's Comrade Records, the band has played extensively in Melbourne and has made regular visits to Sydney and Adelaide.

Oneironaut have been playing with the likes of Further, High Dependency Unit, Machine Translations, Disaster Plan, Decoder Ring and International Karate. The addition of a cello player has seen the band embark on a solid year of writing and recording. The resulting album 'pure through evolution' is a melting pot of sounds and ideas, this time utilizing a vast array of musicians. From horns to theremins, operatic vocals and strings, the band has produced 11 new songs expanding on their trademark guitar sound and lush arrangements.

Oneironaut launch new album Pure Through Evolution at the Rob Roy on Saturday October 9 with Disaster Plan and Colditz Glider.

But wait - there's more! Here's what you can look forward to on Tyranny Of Distance in the next couple of weeks too...

More details soon!

Tune in for our very own intimate preview live on the airwaves this Tuesday.

And, hear what Decoder Ring have to say about their new album Somersault. It's the soundtrack to the best new Australian film in years (unless you ask Jim Schembri) and the debut feature film for director Cate Shortland. It screened at Cannes, received standing ovations, has everyone talking and includes one of the most starkly beautiful soundtracks you'll ever hear. Find out all about the film here, and find out all about the soundtrack next Tuesday on Tyranny Of Distance with Tom of Decoder Ring.

On top of that Dan from Ballarat band Epicure - famous for the song Armies Against Me - will be on the blower for a bit of chat too.

Tune in... it's fucking jam packed. Packed. Jam like.

Nightstick Bludgeon Studio Five

Next week expect a dynamite set from Studio Five from Brisbane's insane and brilliant trio Nightstick (featuring Heinz, ex Not From There; Martin, ex Regurgitator; and Tam, from The Standing Eight Counts and Full Fathom Five among others).

As well as Nightstick, Kit and Jay from the Kits will be heading in for a chat and they'll be bringing in some brand new tunes they just laid down - new and exclusive to Tyranny Of Distance!!

Here's more on the fucking 'Stick....

The frantic and frenetic NIGHTSTICK return to Melbourne next weekend for 4 shows!!
Conceived in a Brisbane carpark in early 2003 by former ping-pong adversaries Martin and Heinz. Tam’s presence was demanded because he could play the bass guitar better then all the single-gloved street punks out there. He accepted the challenge on the condition that he use Martin's Fender bass guitar, the one previously owned by Duff McKagan. Martin said yes.
They locked themselves away and began to write a short, fast and gleefully manic set of songs. They liked it that way.
Inspired by the sheer precision of the mechanics who perform in Formula One pit lanes, the band trained themselves to set up their drums, amplifiers and guitars in less than 10 seconds. They claimed the Nightstick title because an old friend said it sounded both sexy and violent.
Nightstick have already cracked Triple J’s playlist, performed at this year’s Big Day Out, and have just released their debut ep on new label DOT DASH.
Nightstick’s urgent, direct and electric music make them one of the most exciting live bands in the country.

Nightstick play:

Thursday 9th Sep – Cut It Out @ Ding Dong
w/ Sinking Citizenship + Group Seizure
Friday 10th Sep - Mischief @ Volt Nightclub (cnr Heaths & Derrimut Rds, Hoppers Crossing)
w/ Remake Remodel
and 2am @ The Moser Room
w/ Vegas Kings
Sat 11th Sep – Dance Motherfucker Dance @ 101
w/ Love Of Diagrams + My Disco + Colditz Glider + Jemima Jemima

Fire Underground Go The Distance

A live set!! By Fire Underground!! On Tyranny Of Distance!!

(to the tune of playschool)

There's guitar and drums
Clarinet as well
There's fun to be had.... and stories to telllll
Drop that frown
Come on down
Fire Underground!

It's happening on PBS this Tueday after 11am. Fire Underground are a local drums and guitar (and clarinet) two piece from Melbourne Town. They haven't been playing all that long, but they have earned a rather good live reputation and will be proving why when they enter PBS' Studio Five for a couple of songs this week on Tyranny Of Distance.

Here's more - you can find it all at this website

Fire Underground is a two-piece band currently living in Melbourne, however Daniel (guitar/vocals/clarinet) and Doyle (drums) both originally hail from the country growing up in Ballarat and Warragul respectively. They combine the unusual mix of acoustic melodic numbers, enthusiastic rock/punk riffs with electric guitars, and the use of a clarinet, to bring together a sound that can only be described as their own.

Drawing on influences like old school punk bands of the 70’s, swing music, modern acoustic acts and dirty rock and roll, Fire Underground have developed a style that is more than entertaining to watch live, is powerful but fun, and thoroughly danceable.

The genuine love for the music they play is blatant. Both vocalist/guitarist Daniel, and drummer Doyle put in such a performance on stage, making it clear to all watching just what their music means to them.

The band recently became a top 10 finalist in the punk category in 2003 at The Musicoz Awards, Australia's premier music awards for unsigned artists, and were finalists in the 2003 PBS FM song writing competition.

In the past year, FU have been developing their live skills playing in venues all across Melbourne with bands such as The Black Keys, The Pictures and The Cants.
In 2004 they release their debut EP - Chase Scene, and take their live show to Sydney and Brisbane mid year.

And another thing...

This Tuesday (June 29) one of the guys from Starky will be talking to me from Sydney before their show here with the almighty Casanovas and the spunky Spazzys, and as well the lovely Jeremy Cole from Brisbane's The Zebras will be chatting about their album out on Lost & Lonesome Recordings - they'll be playing a few shows in Melbourne in a week or two.

Just a reminder that the annual PBS Radio Festival is coming up real soon - there are lots of show specials to listen out for and great radio happening all through July 1-11.
Celebrating 25 years of PBS on air, 25 YEARS TO LIFE is the theme in an exploration of crime and music.
Here's a few of the shows so listen up...

Friday July 2 & 9 at 5pm
Beat Orgy c.1979
Steve Cross goes low riding across the USA, Europe and the UK with a soundtrack courtesy of The Clash, The Who, The Specials, Blue Cheer, Patti Smith, The Meters, The Pop Group, David Bowie, The Undertones, Neville Brothers, Talking Heads, The Ruts and… ur… Wings. The full horror of the era.

Wednesday July 7 at 10pm
Kene Lighfoot of BURNING BITUMEN will be exposing rock and roll HAIR CRIMES of the last 25 years. From Dee Snider's weird blonde mane to Trouble's fuzzy mullets, from the excess hair spray of Pretty Boy Floyd to the duo afros of Melbourne's own Dynamo. Kene Lightfoot plays two hours of music from bands who should get 25 years to life for their hair styles on the Burning Bitumen 25 Years to Life special.

There's plenty more where they came from - click here and take a peek.

Tyranny Of Distance will be time travelling from 1979 to 2004 in an A-Z of Australian music from AC/DC to the Zebras, including the Go-Betweens and the Johnnys (who are reforming for a one off show to celebrate the Tote's 21st birthday this Sunday - after the Community Cup) and the Lime Spiders and Regurgitator... plus a whole alphabet more.
